After being told he was too short to play the saxophone, Sam began playing trumpet at the age of eight. Thriving on the sound of the trumpet, he gradually fell in love with all things music, winning a music scholarship to study at St Kevin's College in 2011, under the tuition of Bruno Siketa. Now, Sam resides at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) under the tuition of Dave Elton and Tristram Williams.
With a particular focus on orchestral trumpet playing, Sam has engaged widely within youth music programs across the country. He is currently spending his final year in the Melbourne Youth Orchestra, after serving as principal trumpet from 2015-2017. Sam has also performed in the Australian Youth Orchestra's National Music Camp and Young Symphonists program, as well as the Australian International Symphony Orchestra Institute. In a solo setting, Sam has participated in the Melbourne Youth Orchestra’s ‘Virtuosity’ concerto competition in 2014, winning the excellence award with a performance of Arutunian's trumpet concerto, alongside winning both the National and State champion brass player for under 19s.
Upon completing his time at ANAM, Sam hopes to pursue further study in Europe, with the aim of winning a full time position in a professional orchestra.
