Robert Nicholls is currently a student at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), studying double bass with Damien Eckersley. He holds a Bachelor of Music (Honours) from the University of Melbourne (2015) where he studied under Benjamin Hanlon. Awards he has received include the James and Jean Hemphill Award for Musical Excellence 2007, and in 2015 he was named as a recipient of the Corinna D’Hage Mayer String Scholarship.
Robert has spent a number of years working as a freelance double and electric bassist, which has seen him perform in a huge variety of contexts such as concert halls, opera houses and recording studios. In 2014 he toured China for three months with the Australian International Opera Company, working with such Broadway artists as Lisa Vroman, Douglas LaBrecque and Brad Little. During his studies in 2015, Robert built upon this success including professional engagements with Orchestra Victoria, appearing as a guest artist with ANAM and his solo debut with the Hopkins Sinfonia.
Looking to the future, Robert is expanding his experience as an orchestral double bassist. In his spare time, he enjoys a range of hobbies. These include reading, exercising, cooking, and learning new skills. He firmly believes a balanced and varied lifestyle will place him in the best possible position to pursue his career.
