Mariette grew up surrounded by music. She and her five brothers all were taught piano and recorder by their mother from age five, each choosing one extra instrument to learn – Mariette chose violin and her first teacher was her eldest brother. Growing up she was part of her family’s recorder and string ensembles, and joined the local youth orchestra at age seven.
When Mariette was 14 she discovered a viola lying around the house and started learning it for fun, quickly discovering a love for the instrument and subsequently dropping her other instruments to seriously pursue viola. She joined the Sydney Youth Orchestras in 2007, a few months after starting viola, where she remained until her final year in 2014, in the role of principal viola.
Mariette completed a Bachelor of Music Studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (2011-2013), studying under Nikki Divall, with whom she continued to learn for the following two years, and now studies at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) with Caroline Henbest.
Mariette has performed with the Elision Ensemble at BIFEM, the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, the Musician Project, various AYO programs, and was principal viola for the Australia International Symphony Orchestra Institute (AISOI) in 2014. She has played in masterclasses for Ori Kam and Christian-Pierre La Marca. She had a 10 minute conducting lesson with Simone Young.
While classical music is her passion, Mariette also enjoys other music – she sings and plays in a Folk-Jazz Fusion band with one of her brothers. She also loves cooking and coffee.
