James began the study of drum kit at the age of seven with Adam Manning. He completed his HSC in 2010 and moved to Sydney the following year to study a Bachelor of Music (Performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with teachers Daryl Pratt, Rick Miller and Mark Robinson. During his time in Sydney James performed with various orchestras and ensembles at university as well as community based orchestras across the city.
After graduating from university James moved to Melbourne to study at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in 2015. He has since performed with the ANAM Orchestra conducted by Simone Young as well as other international conductors. He has also played with chamber groups Synergy Percussion, the Australian Brass Quintet and Elision.
In 2016 James began performing casually with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Andrew Davis and Benjamin Northey. He also began performing with Orchestra Victoria for the Australian Ballet's production of Njinsky conducted by Nicolette Fraillon and Opera Australia's La Boheme conducted by Andrea Molino. In September 2016 James performed with the Australian World Orchestra on their Sydney/Singapore tour.
