2017 Musicians & FellowsElijah Cornish

Elijah Cornish was born and educated in Melbourne. He began playing the trombone in primary school at age eight and continued on to the musically reputed Blackburn High School. He graduated from Monash University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Music Performance having studied under Eric Klay, and graduated from University of Melbourne in 2013 with a Bachelor of Music Performance Honours. Since 2012 Elijah has studied under Mike Szabo. At both institutions Elijah has received scholarships based on merit and performance achievement. Starting in 2014, Elijah has completed one year of the Master of Music Performance at the University of Melbourne.

Elijah has received numerous state titles in bass trombone, and in 2012 was the National Bass Trombone Champion of Australia. Bass trombone has taken Elijah to many countries, including a short chamber music course in Italy (2012), a diploma in bass trombone in Denmark (2014), as well as performances in Germany, New Zealand, the USA and even in the Kingdom of Tonga!

His ensemble experience spans many different musical styles, including ensembles such as the Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camp, Melbourne Youth Orchestra, Monash Academy and University of Melbourne Orchestras, Kew and Box Hill Brass Bands as well as various big bands around Melbourne including the Plan B Big Band.

Elijah is currently studying with Jessica Buzbee at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM).
