At the age of eight, Alexander Waite had his heart set on being an electronic keyboard player, but was reluctantly convinced to learn the piano by his first teacher. After playing for a year, he quit the instrument, only to regain his passion at the start of high school and not look back. Moving from Gippsland to Sydney after finishing school, Alex completed a Bachelor of Music (Performance) with First Class Honours at the Sydney Conservatorium, and is now back in Melbourne to study with Timothy Young at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM).
Whilst in Sydney, Alex held several scholarships from the Conservatorium and a music scholarship from St Andrews College. He was a student of another ex-Gippsland boy Dr Paul Rickard-Ford, and his time in Sydney included performing a recital in Theme and Variations’ Emerging Artist Series, touring regional NSW, and being selected for the inaugural Estivo Chamber Music Summer School in Verona, Italy.
Alex has a particular passion for performing with others, and gains the most joy from playing chamber music. Since returning to Melbourne, highlights of Alex’s include performances with Silvia Careddu, Steve Davislim and the Elision Ensemble. He has also appeared as a soloist and chamber musician on Fine Music 102.5, 3MBS and ABC Classic FM.
Alongside his busy ANAM schedule, Alex enjoys teaching piano at Beaconhills College, and hopes to balance a life of performing and teaching post-ANAM. When not sitting at the piano, Alex can be found cooking, reading, and being overly pretentious about coffee.
