At age eleven, Alex MacDonald was told he needed to upgrade his 3/4 size violin. He decided that biggest was best so bought a viola, and hasn't looked back since.
As recent graduate of the University of Auckland and freelancer Alex is now embarking on a Masters delving into the relationships between composer and performer in the context of solo viola works.
In 2013 he founded the Rothko Quartet and won the ROSL/Pettman scholarship which saw them tour Europe. A highlight of the tour was presenting five concerts of different music in five days at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Since then he is in demand internationally as a violist, a highlight of which is the Lucerne Festival Academy 2017.
Alex is also passionate about cooking and fresh produce from Melbourne's markets.
