MusiciansNathan Gatenby

Hailing from sunny Brisbane, Nathan is a Melbourne-based percussionist with a passion for orchestral and chamber performance. Having completed his Bachelor of Music in Performance at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University under Vanessa Tomlinson and Francois Combemorel, Nathan commenced his training at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in 2020.

Nathan’s career kickstarted after winning the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Snare Drum Award in 2017. Following an internship with the orchestra, he has since played with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Bolshoi Ballet, Opera Australia, Camerata, the 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony, and more. His involvement with the Queensland Youth Orchestra has seen him tour internationally across Asia and Europe, and his playing has been broadcast live on national radio at several Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camp concerts. During his studies, Nathan was the runner-up for best undergraduate classical musician in 2017, and a finalist at the Australian Percussion Gathering Competition in 2016.

Percussionists often find it difficult to perform in unique locations due to their instruments being so cumbersome, however Nathan’s love for educational performances has seen him overcome this hurdle by developing an in-school workshop series using instruments made from vegetables. He has spent thousands of hours teaching music in schools and loves to use innovative teaching methods to build confidence in young musicians. His favourite instrument is the eggplant castanet.

In his spare time, Nathan listens to an array of podcasts and audiobooks. On Sundays, he can often be found in his local church’s worship team on drums, guitar, piano, or if you’re unlucky, voice.
