2018 MusiciansAlexander MacDonald

At age eleven, Alexander was told he needed to upgrade his 3/4 size violin. He decided that biggest was best, so bought a viola, and hasn't looked back since.

As recent graduate of the University of Auckland and freelancer, in 2018 Alexander will be completing his third and final year at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) studying with Caroline Henbest. Alongside his busy schedule at ANAM, Alexander is working on his Master of Music (Research) delving into the relationships between composer and performer in the context of solo viola works.

In 2013 he founded the Rothko Quartet, and won the ROSL/Pettman Scholarship, which saw the Quartet tour Europe. A highlight of the tour was presenting five concerts of different music in five days at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Since then, Alexander has been in demand internationally as a violist, a highlight of which was with the Lucerne Festival Academy in 2017.

Alexander is also passionate about cooking and fresh produce from Melbourne's markets.
