2019 MusiciansAlexander Meagher

Born and raised in Melbourne, Alexander graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2017 with a Bachelor of Music (Honours) in Percussion. During his studies he received several awards, including the Ormond Exhibitions Scholarship and the John Gaitskell Memorial Mensa Prize. He is commencing training at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in 2019.

From early on, Alexander was exposed to a wide range of music genres and subsequently has a very eclectic taste, both within the classical repertoire and beyond. He has performed with a variety of ensembles, including the Australian Discovery Orchestra, the Heidelberg Choral Society, as well as with early music ensembles such as Trillo and the Loude Band, and in new music environments as part of the 2016 Melbourne Festival. He was also a crowd performer in Speak Percussion’s premiere of Atlas of the Sky by Australian composer Liza Lim.

Alexander especially enjoys being a musician for theatrical productions, performing with the Victorian College of the Arts Musical Theatre Company and the Australian Conservatoire of Ballet. He was particularly inspired by the music in the Pop-Up Globe after visiting in early 2018, and one day hopes to be involved in similar productions.

In 2017 Alexander was selected to travel to Yogyakarta, Indonesia for Where the Story Begins, a collaboration between the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, in which students of visual arts, theatre and music from each institution collaborated to create multi-disciplinary performance pieces for the public.

With interests in languages and history, Alexander is determined to gain a deeper understanding of the various musical styles, percussion instruments and techniques of the world, and is thrilled when opportunities arise to put them into practice.
