2017 Musicians & FellowsMelissa Shirley

Melissa started learning the horn when she was 13 years old at Christian College Geelong. She completed her Bachelor of Music with Honours in 2015 at the University of Melbourne where she studied under Anton Schroeder and Roman Ponomariov, and in 2016 was studying her first year of the Masters of Music Performance degree under Saul Lewis.

While studying at the Conservatorium Melissa was awarded multiple scholarships for merit and in 2014 travelled to Denmark with the Conservatorium brass ensemble where she received a diploma in horn at the Danish Brass Academy. Melissa performed in many of the University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra concerts, including on principal horn in 2015/16 where she was fortunate enough to perform Mahler's Symphony no. 5 and Stravinsky's Firebird.

Over the past few years Melissa has worked as a freelance musician with the Victorian Opera Company, Lyric Opera of Melbourne and the Australian International Opera Company. This is Melissa’s first year at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and she is very excited to be working with all of the amazing faculty and guest artists this year.
